The Christmas season can be challenging for many families, especially during covid! As everyone prepares to celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years it can seem frustrating that there are few activities seemingly available to keep the holiday spirit this year!

We’ve put together a list of activities that you can do with your child this year to raise spirits in your home and teach your child about the TRUE meaning of Christmas!

1. Bake Together

This is a classic way to spread Holiday cheer! Teach your children how to bake cookies, or maybe bake an apple pie together! Show your children how to use baking tools safely and spend quality time doing something fun. When I was younger, my mother would always bake cookies with us around the Holidays, and we would bring them to our neighbors! It was a simple gesture that taught me about quality time and giving, I still do it to this day! In fact, I’ve submitted our family recipe to the VCA cookbook, which will be available to families this March! If you’d like to do the same, contact Melissa here!

2. View Christmas Lights in Colorado Springs

Going out to see Christmas lights can be a truly magical experience! It is so much fun to see the way that other people decorate their homes to celebrate Christmas, and it’s a fun outing for your family to experience together! In Colorado Springs there are hundreds of houses decorated beautifully, and Timberline landscaping put together a map with our city’s best lights here!

They’ve even created this fun scavenger hunt that you can complete with your children while viewing the lights!

3. Christmas Crafts

Making Christmas crafts is one of the easiest Christmas activities because there are SO many options! There are crafts easy enough for little ones and complex enough for older kids too! Each child can complete a craft by themselves, or even give them as a gift! We’ve already put together a list of our favorite Christmas crafts here – check them out!

4. Holiday Movie Night

There are few things kids love more than spending time watching a movie these days! Organizing a Holiday movie night can give you the opportunity to leave the Holiday stress behind and spend time with the kids without worrying about chores or gifts! There are plenty of Christmas movies that your family will love! We love the movie “The Star” – which follows the narrative about the birth of Jesus from the perspective of a donkey! This lighthearted animation is sure to keep your child engaged while teaching them about the TRUE meaning of Christmas!

5. Read the Bible Together

As always, we need to remember that during the hustle and bustle of Christmas, what we are really celebrating is the birth of Christ. Read scripture with your children and relay to them the importance of advent and preparing our hearts. Share with them the true joy and hope of this season!

The holidays can often get stressful, especially in the middle of a pandemic, but these five simple family activities can make your holidays more memorable and magical! When your children get the chance to bake something, see others celebrate, make crafts, spend time with their family, and learn about Jesus, they will begin to grow with a true appreciation for what Christmas is really all about.

Merry Christmas VCA family!
