About our CurriculumWe use a mix of direct instruction and hands-on instruction to give students a well-rounded school experience. From preschool – elementary, our students are learning by listening, repeating, writing, and experiencing!
PRESCHOOL
As a classical school, we use a literature rich, classical core curriculum as well as Heggerty Phoenemic Awareness, and Core Knowledge. This Classical Christian curriculum prepares students with proficiency in the 6 dimensions of readiness as well as a love for learning!
Elementary
Our elementary students learn with a primarily direct instruction program! We believe in this method of teaching so much that we train ALL of our teachers in it! With direct instruction, our elementary students are learning using Reading Mastery, Saxon Math, and only the best elementary curriculums on the market. Mixed with our direct instruction approach, our students are able to excel in every subject and learn at a rapid pace! Of course, while we believe in the DI method, we also believe in play and experience. We give students of all ages ample and appropriate time for playing, socializing, and having fun!
A Christian Approach
At Valley Christian Academy we are so proud that we have the opportunity to teach little ones about Christ! At our school we are not afraid to pray with kids, teach them bible stories, and talk about God. Teaching about Christ from a young age is quintessential to their faith throughout their entire lives! We participate in prayer daily, discuss bible stories in class, and hold a live chapel once a week in our multipurpose room.
What is Direct Instruction?
The basic assumptions of direct instructions are that all students can be taught, and all teachers can succeed with proper training and materials! We break concepts up into bite sized pieces, give guided practice, and use previously taught knowledge. In delivery, direct instruction follows scripted lessons , quick pacing, and group responses to keep students engaged.
Believe it or not, this model works for all age groups (yes, preschoolers!) though we use it alongside hands-on, play based curriculum.
